National High Adventure Camps

There 4 National High Adventure Bases:

  • Philmont (backpacking in New Mexico),
    • lottery typically in November 18 months prior.
  • Sea Base (sailing, island camping, scuba diving in Florida, St Thomas),
    • lottery typically late Jan/early Feb 18 month prior.
  • Northern Tier (Canoeing, fly-in canoeing in BWCA/Canada),
    • lottery typically in beginning of January 18 month prior.
  • Summit Bechtel Reserve (climbing, shooting, riding and white water rafting in West Virginia, newest base opened 2013)
    • No lottery, reservations taken, deposit due May 31st of year prior.


The Triple Crown award/patch is achieved when a scout has participated in 3 of the 4 National High Adventure Base camps listed above.

The Grand Slam award/patch is achieved when a scout has participated in all 4 of the National High Adventure Base camps listed above.


Scouts have to be at least 14 years old OR are 13 and have completed the 8th grade to be eligible to participate

Cost: $800-1200 depending on camp plus travel expenses


Registration planning:  Recruiting and planning for these trips need to start 2 years prior to be best prepared for the lottery.
